This site is located 2.5 hours from the city, in the heart of the Mexican Plateau. Defined by a semi-arid climate and high-altitude basins, this region features a mosaic of microphyllous xerophytic shrubs in dry lowlands to specialized halophyte communities in saline interior soils. In the middle of this plain lives one of the largest colonies of the Mexican prairie dog, a charismatic species that always accompanies us during birdwatching.
This area is a also habitat for the endemic and endangered Worthen’s Sparrow. Also, we can find Black-throated Sparrow, Black-tailed Gnatcatcher, Scaled Quail, Eastern Meadowlark, Horned Lark, Cactus Wren, Greater Roadrunner, Curve-billed Thrasher, Loggerhead Shrike, Golden Eagle and Northern Flicker. Winter is also a good time to look for Prairie Falcon, Ferruginous Hawk, as well as many sparrow species.
