On this tour we will visit the Centro IDEAS in the municipality of Higueras, which is primarily characterized by Tamaulipan thorn scrub and submontane scrub due to its location in a semi-arid region. The area is particularly influenced by the nearby Sierra de Picachos. It also has a lagoon where we can observe some aquatic birds.
This spot is habitat for Verdin, Northern Cardinal, Pyrrhuloxia, Northern Mockingbird, Killdeer, Ringed and Green Kingfisher, Great Kiskadee, Ferruginous Pygmy Owl, Ladder-backed and Golden-fronted Woodpeckers, Gray Hawk, Rose-throated Becard, Broad-billed Hummingbird, Black Phoebe, Plain Chachalaca, Common Ground Dove, Least and Pied-billed Grebes, Osprey, Brown and Green Jays, Olive Sparrow, Clay-colored Thrush, Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet, Hooed Oriole and many more. Summer is a good season to look for Painted Bunting and Blue Grosbeak while winter is a good season for Blue-headed Vireo, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and Eastern Phoebe, among others.
In addition to birdwatching, this site offers various activities such as interpretive trails, environmental education, and a cafe with local products like wild oregano and goat cheese.
